Bruce and Irene Robjent were the sponsors of the last fruit tree to be planted on the orchard grid. Their tree, St Edmunds Russet apple, is dedicated to French friends of the Fen Edge Twinning Association in Avrille. We look forward to welcoming them to the orchard on their next exchange visit.
120 fruit and nut trees, including an edible Rowan with larger berries, have now been planted with 114 on the orchard grid, which will soon be labelled with the dedications of their sponsors. All the trees have either been sponsored or donated in kind which is a great achievement. We hope visitors enjoy the orchard in the spring when in blossom.
Councillor Baird, Chairman SCDC, accompanied by WPC Chairman Councillor Andrew Cook and District Councillor Ray Manning officially opened the new Youth Centre on January 24th, assisted by The Reverend Linda Liversidge and other members of the Willingham Youth Trust (WYT). Tributes were paid to all those who have contributed over the many years of planning and fund raising, especially the Reverend Trevor Rowe, the former Baptist Minister. WYT was formed under his Chairmanship as a development of initiatives taken earlier by the Willingham Action Group. Also to Caroline Hyde who has worked tirelessly in applying for grants and funding with great success.
The funding for the new building came from 106 development funds held by the Parish Council, SCDC and local donations. Recently the Fen Edge Community Association (FECA) gave a grant towards equipment.
There was an excellent turn out for the event as Willingham celebrated having a Youth Club based in dedicated premises with cakes, hot dogs and popcorn on offer plus refreshments. Youth Club evenings run on Wednesday 6.30-8.30pm and Thursday 6.30-8pm during term times, for ages 11–16, with a varied programme provided by our trained youth workers. New members welcome. Community groups interested in using the new space or putting on an event should contact: Terry Jones 01954 200971; e-mail email@example.com
