Cottenham Fun Run helps Cottenham Primary School Learning Resource Centre

The Cottenham Fun Run, held in May, raised £700 and today the proceeds were presented by the Fen Edge Community Association to Cottenham Primary School.  At school assembly Mr James Kilsby, Headteacher, announced that the money would be used to buy new books and materials for the school’s Learning Resource Centre.

The Learning Resource Centre (LRC) opened a year ago and was designed with input from a group of ‘Year 6 Librarians’. The pupils requested that the Centre should have an internet cafe feel and it   features a row of i-desk integrated computers and desks for student use. They also asked for bespoke bookshelf furniture, lots of light and plenty of colours on the floor.

The LRC is the school’s lending library and is also used by classes for guided reading sessions with their teachers. Pupils can visit the Centre during the lunchtime break and it is also the location for a Reading for Pleasure club.

On Thursday afternoons, the after school LRC Drop-In provides an opportunity for parents and children to visit the Learning Resource Centre to change books, read and generally access resources.

Fen Edge Community Association presentation to Cottenham Primary SchoolMr Kilsby said that the £700 grant would have a direct impact on increasing the stock of books held by the Learning Resource Centre. The Centre is managed by Mrs Debbie Lingley supported by Mrs Davina Garner, Mrs Rebecca Struthers and the Year 6 Junior Librarians.

Cottenham Primary School is justifiably proud of their Learning Resource Centre and the part it is playing in helping the school to achieve above national average scores in reading ability and progress.

Running for Fun in the Cottenham Fun Run 2016

Cottenham Fun Run 2016 which took place at Cottenham Village College and through Cottenham village on 7 May was a great success. It was the weekend of Twinning – when families from Avrille in France visited – and some took part in the race.

The schoolchildren set off first, 62 of them running the 1mile route round the back of the college. Later, the sun shone on the 112 runners (69 adults and 43 children) in the 7km race round the village.

There was a carnival atmosphere on the college green where stalls were set up by Fen Edge Community Association members: Cottenham Theatre Workshop, Cottenham Ladybird Pre-School, Cottenham Women’s Institute, Cottenham Gardening Club and Cottenham Community Centre.  Entry fees raised about £700. In due course this will be donated to Cottenham Primary School; they propose to purchase new library books.

Fen Edge Community Association would like to thank Martyn Leeks for organising the event and for Malary Ltd, waste recycling solutions, for its support through sponsorship.

The winners and runners up of the Cottenham Fun Run 2016 in all categories (Primary girl and boy; Village College girl and boy; Adult male and female; Veteran/45+ male and female) were:

Cottenham Fun Run 2015 – A great day for a run

There was quite a buzz at Cottenham Village College on Saturday 2 May from early morning as stalls were set up and adults and children came to register for the two events in the Cottenham Fun Run 2015. As they were putting their names down and paying their fees, a group of Year 5 boys and girls played their ukuleles under the direction of music teachers Barbara Duckworth and Helen West. This project, to introduce all Year 5 children to the simple but rewarding instrument, was chosen as the beneficiary of the annual Cottenham Fun Run which is sponsored by the Fen Edge Community Association and Malary. After costs were covered, the Cottenham Primary School ukulele fund received £200.

The organiser of the Cottenham Fun Run 2015, Martyn Leeks, reported that the main 7k race attracted 80 adults and 21 children. 95 primary school children entered and completed the junior race of about a mile. You can see the results here, and Martyn can supply a list of all runners, positions and times if you contact him at info@martynleeksltd.co.uk . He also thanked everyone involved – Fen Edge Community Association trustee Rebecca Cole, the marshalls, registrars, 2nd Cottenham Scouts and their leaders and helpers, and Cottenham Primary School who help make the Cottenham Fun Run happen.

The Year 5 Ukulele Group busked at the Cottenham Fun Run, their first appearance since the project began a term ago.

Rebecca Cole at the start line, with all the eager young runners raring to go once Barbara Duckworth, Chair of Governors of Cottenham Primary School, blew the horn.

Fun Run 2014

Cottenham Fun Run 2014, on the first bank holiday weekend in May, got off to an early start on the Saturday morning with the arrival at Cottenham Village College of 200 enthusiastic contestants to register. All would be running for a good cause: Sunflowers Care in Cottenham which provides nurse-led care to children from babies to 18 year olds with a variety of complex health needs.

For the main race, 98 adults, 20 college children and 7 primary school children put their names down for the 4mile/7km walk or run through Cottenham. There were 75 juniors to take part in the race around the CVC playing field, starting at 10am. As the event is organised by volunteers, the entrance fees of £5 (over16s) and £3 (under16s) went to the charitable partner. There were stalls on the college green which also contributed to the sum donated (after costs) of £412.

Runners who came first, second and third were awarded prizes. Children received an engraved medal and an Amazon voucher (from £20 to £10); adults were given an engraved medal, and category winners (men, women, veterans, CVC boys, CVC girls, primary school boys – there were no entrants primary school girls) won a £20 Amazon voucher. Bonus goodies for all winners came from the French twinners de Avrillé who had arrived the night before and would be spending the weekend in the Fen Edge villages.
